Research

Tulsi also promotes longevity and resistance to stress (Winston & Maimes, 2007). In Western herbalism, it is considered an adaptogen, helping the body respond to stressors, thus reducing the negative effects of stress on physical and emotional health and providing balance. Tulsi’s antioxidant, neuroprotective, and radioprotective actions are considered protective and antiaging (Winston & Maimes, 2007).

As a nervine, tulsi has a dual action that is both stimulating and relaxing to the brain. While these are seemingly disparate effects, they are indeed related. As herbalist Rebecca Altman (2014) describes, tulsi regulates the nervous system by its opening action, moving blocked energy to dispel sluggishness as well as move and direct restless energy to ease hyperactivity and inability to concentrate. Herbalist David Winston uses the herb for poor memory, attention deficit disorder (ADD), and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) because of its ability to enhance cerebral circulation (Winston & Maimes, 2007). In addition, tulsi is indicated for stagnant, situational depression, in which one is stuck in a depressive state related to a particular trauma (Winston & Maimes, 2007). By moving stuck energy in the energetic nervous system, tulsi “lifts” the depression, uplifting and opening the heart for better emotional expression and connection with others. Tulsi also helps heart health by enhancing healthy circulation via its slight blood thinning and circulatory stimulant actions, reducing cardiovascular stress both physically and via its adaptogenic actions.

Tulsi also has anxiolytic action and is used to ease anxiety. In a clinical study by Bhattacharyya et al. (2008) of 35 patients with generalized anxiety disorder, participants were given 500 mg of O. tenuiflorum extract twice a day after meals. The study observations indicated that tulsi “significantly (p<0.001) attenuated generalized anxiety disorders and also attenuated its correlated stress and depression” (Bhattacharyya et al., 2008, Abstract).

About Tulsi

"As a nervine, it is initially stimulating, but then brings a calm and reassuring sense of solidity and groundedness that helps quiet the mind, collect distracted thoughts into focus, and give one a sense of resilience for the long haul. It is uplifting and joyful, guiding open the heart to feel gratitude and a yearning for emotional connection.

It can also be used in instances of situational depression (Winston & Maimes, 2007). As herbalist Rebecca Altman (2014) describes, tulsi regulates the nervous system by its opening action, moving blocked energy to dispel sluggishness as well as move and direct restless energy to ease hyperactivity and inability to concentrate.
